Summer's almost here, and we Kiwis can't wait to get back on our boats. But if it's been a while since your last outing, it's important to give your boat a once-over before heading out.
A bit of prep before your first launch can prevent any unexpected (and often avoidable) problems on the water.
Your pre-launch checklist
Battery maintenance
Pop the battery back in if it's been stored away. Make sure it's fully charged, the terminals are clean, and there's no corrosion. If it's been away for some time, it pays to get it professionally checked.¹
Test the electronics
Switch on all the electronic devices and navigation gear to make sure they're working properly. If not, replace any faulty parts.¹
Inspect the hull and propeller
Take a good look at the hull for any cracks or damage. If you find any, fix them up before launching your boat to avoid bigger problems later on.²
If your hull has bungs, make sure they're in place and still watertight.
Look over the propeller for any damage and make sure it's securely attached. Clean up any debris that might be wrapped around the propshaft.³
Check the engine
Inspect the engine for any wear and tear, and make sure the fuel system doesn't have any leaks or blockages. If it's been a while, change the oil, oil filter, hydraulic fluids, coolant, and fuel. Check the coolant system is working properly.¹
Before your trailered boat hits the water, run the engine on land with a hose and muffs to make sure it starts and runs smoothly. Keep an eye out for any leaks or strange noises.¹
Check the bilge pump
Test the bilge pump is working properly. It's really important as it helps get rid of any water that might get into your boat. A quick test can save you a lot of trouble later on!
Clean your boat
Give your boat a good clean inside and out, getting rid of any dirt, grime, and mildew that might have built up with it was stored away.⁴
Safety gear
Triple check you've got life jackets, fire extinguishers, and distress signals on board and that they're in good shape and easy to access. Replace any expired flares and other time-sensitive items.⁴
Don't forget your trailer
If you use a trailer, look it over for any rust or worn tyres. Check the brakes and lights work, lubricate the wheel bearings, and check that the hitch is secure.⁴
Do the paperwork
Check when your next service is due and book your boat in for a thorough check-up. Also, make sure your boat registration, insurance policy, and any necessary permits are up-to-date and on board.¹
