About Tower
Born and bred in New Zealand, Tower has been helping Kiwis when they need it most for more than 150 years. In that time, we’ve grown to operate across Aotearoa and the Pacific in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa and the Cook Islands, supporting our customers with cover for their houses, cars, contents, businesses and more.
While our heritage is important to us, we’ve also set our sights on the future. Tower’s focus on innovation and investment in large-scale digital transformation has enabled the business to evolve rapidly in line with the latest in technology and customer expectations. The result is customer-focused, digital-first insurance solutions that suit the modern lifestyles of our customers.
Our history
Tower's origins go back to 1869 when the Government Life Insurance Office (Government Life) was created in New Zealand, with its initial capital provided by the New Zealand government.
Government Life became a separate statutory body with the passing of the Government Life Insurance Act in 1953. It was renamed Tower Corporation in 1987 and in 1990 ownership was conferred to its policyholders with the passing of the Tower Corporation Act, allowing Tower to be owned as a mutual association.
To remove growth constraints resulting from difficulties in accessing new capital under the mutual association structure, Tower undertook a demutualisation process in 1999 with the approval of its policyholders and the High Court. The effect of this was to convert Tower’s legal status to a shareholder owned company. After the demutualisation, Tower Limited listed on the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges in September 1999. In November 2006, Tower's New Zealand and Australian businesses were separated with the approval of its shareholders and the High Court.
Tower remains New Zealand's only Kiwi owned and operated general insurer.
We’ve come a long way, from humble beginnings officially protecting our very first customer with insurance in 1869 to now, with more than 300,000 customers across Aotearoa and the Pacific.
But we haven’t just grown. We’ve innovated every step of the way. 155 years ago our policies were paper only. Now our customers can manage their insurance online via My Tower, our signature, self-service, digital platform.
2024 also marked a major milestone for Tower as we celebrated 150 years of operation in the Pacific, having sold our first policy in Fiji in 1874.
