Investing your money responsibly
Investing your money is a serious business. You care about how and where your money is invested, and so do we. We want to invest your money the way you’d want it to be invested, so we’ve adopted the United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) which in essence is global best-practice for responsible investment. And, we’re very proud to be the first KiwiSaver provider in New Zealand to do so.
TOWER takes matters such as human rights, anti-corruption, environment and labour concerns seriously. The adoption of these aspirational Principles signals our commitment to observing a set of environmental, social and governance values that will benefit TOWER’s investors and society as a whole.
Furthermore, a growing body of opinion suggests a clear link between responsible investing and superior risk adjusted returns over time. It entails looking beyond the bottom line and taking into account the bigger picture – obviously an action that just makes good business sense. For example, if a business has unsustainable practices, it is possible that they could be fined or even boycotted which in turn would affect profit and market share. With UNPRI encouraging a full picture view, the risk should be reduced.
TOWER Investments strongly believes in UNPRI’s worth and will strive to implement the Principles wherever possible.
What this means to you as an investor:
- You are invested with a business that actively pursues investment opportunities that seek to maximise returns but also consider the nature of the investment, its governance, activities and environmental and social effects
- If your investment is with a company where the nature of the business conflicts with the Principles, TOWER will endeavour to work with the company to suggest more UNPRI friendly alternatives
- Credible opinion suggests that the Principles can lead to better long-term financial returns for investors and lower risk from investment decisions – great news for investors.
To ensure that the Principles are applied across the board and continuously monitored, TOWER will establish an environmental, social and governance investment compliance team comprised of senior executives. An annual survey will be conducted by the team that reports the progress and delivery on this commitment.
Additionally, we will be working closely with Mercer Consulting to implement and independently monitor UNPRI.
